Cefalù walking tour

Cefalù walking tour

Tour Overview

The seaside village of Cefalù, about 70 km from Palermo, is renowned for the beauty of its landscape, the Norman cathedral with its “Christ Pantocrator,” and the remains of the medieval castle. The current urban centre, built on the ruins of the Greco-Roman city, develops at the foot of the imposing rock protruding into the sea — which the Greeks called kefalon (head), from which the name derives. Its topography mirrors that of the medieval village built by order of the Norman rulers, characterized by narrow alleys and houses built side by side.

Until the 1950s it was a simple fishing village; then, thanks to growing visitor attention, it became one of the island’s top tourist destinations. Through this tour we will discover the majestic Arab-Norman medieval architecture, the Byzantine artistic language of the cathedral’s mosaics, and the charm of a place that has never lost its simplicity and authentic nature.

Itinerary

  1. The meeting point will be as pre-arranged with the client at the hotel or at one of the access points to Cefalù’s historic centre.
  2. We’ll walk along the edge of the ancient walls built on the rocky ridge and see the remains of the Spanish fortification, built on the vestiges of the Norman one, which in turn follows the remains of the Greek one with large irregular blocks.
  3. We’ll visit the Arab-Norman cathedral with its splendid Byzantine mosaics and the famous “Christ Pantocrator.”
  4. We’ll continue through the village alleys to see the medieval washhouse, the picturesque tourist port, and the vestiges of the only remaining city gate, Porta Pescara.
  5. Upon request, we can visit the Mandralisca Museum to admire its archaeological findings and the famous Antonello da Messina painting “Ritratto d’Ignoto” (Unknown Portrait).
  6. At the end of the visit, the client can lunch at one of the charming coastal restaurants, whose terraces are built like pile dwellings directly on the natural rock ledge lapped by the sea.
