Taormina walking tour

Taormina walking tour

Tour Overview

Taormina, often referred to as “The Pearl of the Mediterranean,” is a stunning town renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and historical monuments. Founded by Greek colonists in the mid-4th century BC and later inhabited by the Romans, Taormina’s rich history reflects the influence of multiple civilizations that have shaped Sicily.

The town’s modern layout still follows its medieval origins, with picturesque narrow streets winding along the natural slopes of the hill. Taormina boasts remarkable landmarks including the Greek-Roman Theatre, the Roman Odeon, and several beautiful Gothic-Catalan style palaces and churches. Today it is a sought-after international destination famous for its luxury hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, and scenic rooftop terraces.

Itinerary

  1. I’ll meet you at your preferred location in Taormina — at your hotel or at Messina Gate, one of the two main entrances to the historic centre.
  2. Walking tour along the main street: admire the beautiful 15th-century buildings, particularly the Gothic-Catalan style Palazzo Corvaja and the nearby Baroque church of Saint Catherine.
  3. Explore the ruins of the Roman city: the remains of the Roman baths, the Odeon (built for musical performances and poetry recitals), and the Jupiter Serapis Temple dating to the Imperial Age.
  4. Visit the ancient Greek-Roman Theatre — the largest and most breathtaking landmark in Taormina.
  5. Break for a granita tasting or a traditional ricotta cannolo at one of Taormina’s finest pastry shops. Alternatively, explore the Public Garden with its remarkable eclectic-style summer houses.
