Tour of ancient Tyndaris and Mamertino wine: from archaeological treasures to the vineyards with private trasportation

Tour Overview

Embark on a fascinating journey through the rich history and flavors of the Patti Gulf region. This tour combines the exploration of the ancient colony of Tyndaris, founded in the 4th century BC by the Syracusan tyrant Agathocles, with the story of Mamertino wine, a legacy of the mercenary soldiers who once inhabited the area. The Tyndaris promontory, situated in the heart of Patti Gulf, is home to the archaeological site of the ancient colony, the revered Sanctuary of the Black Madonna, and stunning panoramic views of the Aeolian Islands.

Delve into the intriguing history of the Mamertini soldiers — mercenaries from Campania who captured the Greek cities of Messina and Milazzo, allied with the Carthaginians, and posed a significant threat to Tyndaris and its neighboring Greek communities. These skilled warriors also contributed to Sicily’s wine legacy by cultivating the Nocera vine, the foundation of the famed Mamertino wine. Mentioned by Pliny the Elder in his Natural History, Mamertino remains a celebrated Sicilian wine and earned its DOC certification in 2004.

This tour offers a unique blend of archaeological wonders, breathtaking landscapes, and the timeless allure of Sicily’s winemaking heritage.
