Tour overview
Milazzo is one of the most beautiful towns in the Messina area. Its promontory forms a peninsula that stretches out toward the sea, making it a site of human habitation since the Bronze Age. During the Greek domination of Sicily, Milazzo became an important colony.
Today, the modern town lies at the base of a prominent rock, crowned by the fortified citadel of the 16th century, which includes the Medieval Castle. The monumental complex can be compared to a “Matryoshka doll,” with layers of history nested within one another. After crossing the Spanish wall, you will discover remains from earlier periods, including the 14th-century Aragonese fortifications, the Norman-Swabian walls, and the Muslim tower, the oldest section of the castle.
From the castle’s top terrace, you’ll be treated to a stunning view of the Gulf of Patti, the Aeolian Archipelago, and, in the background, the majestic Nebrodi Mountains and the “smoking” Mount Etna!

flanked by ancient noble palaces, bars, and shops. The meeting point will be at Saint Giacomo Church. - Walk Down the Main Street: We’ll stroll down the main street until we reach the intersection with ColomboStreet, where we can admire Villa Greco and Villa Vaccarino, two of the most important examples of the Liberty style in Sicily.
- Visit the Antiquarium: We will then head towards the street leading to the fortified citadel, making a stop at the local Antiquarium. Here, you can explore archaeological finds that trace the local history, from the Neolithic to the Byzantine era.
- Fortified Citadel & Medieval Castle: Next, we’ll visit the fortified citadel at the top of the rock, where the remains of the Medieval Castle stand.
- MUMA Museum: Inside the citadel, we’ll also visit the MUMA Museum, which is dedicated to the recovery of a sperm whale skeleton caught in an illegal fishing net. The museum focuses on the protection and conservation of the sea and its creatures.
